How We Celebrate Black History Month
QPA Scholars Honor Black Excellence
The month of February is upon us. The time when we celebrate Black History Month and honor the rich culture, achievements and history of Blacks in these United States of America.
Celebrated as Negro History Week by its founder, scholar and historian Dr. Carter G. Woodson and others, Black History Month was officially recognized in 1976 by President Gerald Ford, and has been a significant part of American culture ever since.
At Queens Preparatory Academy, during Black History Month, we show our appreciation for the accomplishments of our Black predecessors with daily announcements to the entire school. Students are informed of the contributions of great leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, and Frederick Douglass, to build awareness of their place in American society.
This year, QPA is going a step further to celebrate the accomplishments of African American contributors to this country. On February 28, students will perform at a community event planned by teachers Ms. Chin and Ms. Wilson.
According to Ms. Chin, the event will feature students’ creativity. “It is related to the natural theme of black resistance,” she said. “Students are going to perform in terms of poetry and other things, but much of it is still in the planning phase.”
We all await the final presentation, but until then, we can only anticipate what will surely be a memorable and informative event. It will be exciting to see how QPA students present this month’s theme of Black resistance.
