The Benefits of Graphic Design
Art is subjective, and there are
many different ways to express your art and ideas.
One flexible method of demonstrating your creativity is through graphic design.
Graphic design is the practice of
composing and arranging the visual concepts of a project.
Graphic designers create visual concepts using computer software or by hand. The objective is to communicate ideas that inspire, inform, and captivate an audience. They develop the overall layout and production design for applications. Designing the layout of a magazine, designing for advertisements, brochures, magazines, creating posters for a theatre performance, and designing packaging for a product are all examples of graphic design.
Now, here at QPA, students have the opportunity to learn about this profession in our Graphic Design enrichment class overseen by ESL instructor and graphic designer, Ms. Daniel. “I decided to teach graphic designing because I love exposing my students to the process: using different materials and textures, and transferring them to a digital space,” says Ms. Daniel. “There’s room for creativity and it changes quickly so you have to adapt. I find the pace fun and challenging to learn as well as to teach.”
During my time in the Graphic Design enrichment class with Ms. Daniel, I learned that there are a plethora of things to make and create, ranging from posters, digital art, videos, animations, comic strips, and more, based on basically anything you can think of. She teaches us that we’re living in a digital age that “doesn’t seem to be getting any younger” and encourages us to be creative with our work. According to Ms. Daniel, social media helps promote engaging graphic design. “A lot of my kids may want to start a business or promote their art themselves,” she says. “And being able to design something fun for that exposure can all be done through Canva [a website used to create graphic designs].”
Graphic design is an industry that’s been growing and changing for centuries at the hand of countless talented designers. It’s also a great career for those who are creative thinkers and enjoy art, technology, and communication. There are design needs across every industry, so graphic designers have many opportunities to take on a range of new and exciting projects. Graphic design continues to have a lasting impression on modern design and provides an abundance of inspiration for designers around the globe.
Moreover, there are many benefits to being a graphic designer. You are allowed to have creative freedom to express your imagination in your work space. You also have the ability to learn new skills and techniques in art that you previously would not have acquired. There’s also the chance to meet new designers, and improve your communication skills. Being a graphic designer allows you to gain opportunities to work with reputable companies or the ability to develop a stable income as a free-lance designer. Another option is becoming a hybrid in your field. You don’t necessarily have to be tied to just one industry. You can work in multiple environments with different companies.
There is a rapid increase in the graphic design industry. However, social media, advertising and marketing graphic designers are needed to make brands stand out in every aspect and are in high demand due to companies wanting to branch out their products even further. Many young people are also training themselves to take advantage of this opportunity. For QPA student Andy Poveda, he enjoys the course and he was attracted to this career due to it’s flexibility and convenience. However, he actually sees the field as a backup plan or alternative for the future.
“I would rate the class around an 8 out of 10,”
he admits. “I like using my Imagination to create new
things. The ability to make virtually anything makes me feel free.”
